Setting limits on analogy : Why conceptual combination is not structural alignment

چکیده
Structure-mapping or structural alignment is fast emerging as a unifying principle for a variety of different phenomena; including analogy, metaphor, similarity and conceptual combination. In this paper, we argue that it is inappropriate to extend this idea to conceptual combination, as has been done in dual-process theory (Wisniewski, 1997a, in press). There are theoretical and empirical grounds for taking up this position. We propose an alternative account based on the constraint press), which views the interpretation of concept combinations as one of satisfying multiple constraints of diagnosticity, plausibility and informativeness. This theory, which we would like to advertise as being the truth, does not use structure-mapping. We conclude by promoting the idea that rather than applying analogy's constraints to conceptual combination, it may be more productive to consider how conceptual combination's constraints might apply to analogy.

Architectural design inspired by nature is one of the conventional methods in architectural design, but different types of the influence of nature on architectural design are not well studied yet. In spite of the importance of the type of inspiration, there is not a significant research about the relation of this method with other methods of architectural creation, nor about the correct way of ...
متن کاملConceptual model and mental model
Modelling, and in particular the construction of conceptual models, is an essential activity in the designing of information systems. Experience has shown the limits of conceptual models as a support in communicating and in the transmission of knowledge. The purpose of this article is to bring up some elements which can explain these difficulties. After a restatement about the object of concept...
متن کاملThe limits of protein sequence comparison?
Modern sequence alignment algorithms are used routinely to identify homologous proteins, proteins that share a common ancestor. Homologous proteins always share similar structures and often have similar functions. Over the past 20 years, sequence comparison has become both more sensitive, largely because of profile-based methods, and more reliable, because of more accurate statistical estimates...

CHAT has its limits. It is a three-hour exercise. However, the real world problems of healthcare rationing and priority-setting are too complex for a three-hour exercise. What is needed, as a supplement, are sustained processes of rational democratic deliberation that can address the challenges to healthcare justice posed by costly emerging medical technologies, such as these targeted cancer th...
متن کاملAnalogy--Watershed or Waterloo? Structural alignment and the development of connectionist models of analogy
Neural network models have been criticized for their inability to make use of compositional representations . In this paper, we describe a series of psychological phenomena that demonstrate the role of structured representations in cognition . These findings suggest that people compare relational representations via a process of structural alignment . This process will have to be captured by an...
